THE STANDARD

The bar most armor never clears.

Level IIIA is a rating on paper. What it actually costs to earn is a testing protocol built to catch armor that only performs on a good day. Here’s what that protocol changed.

  • It replaced two standards, not one.

    NIJ 0101.06 supersedes NIJ 0101.04 Rev. A (June 2001) and the 2005 NIJ Interim Requirements. The rewrite wasn’t cosmetic — it answered real gaps: threats had moved on, and so had how armor actually gets worn day to day.

  • Fired at wet, worn-in armor — not fresh out of the box.

    The old standard needed only a 6-minute water spray before testing. NIJ 0101.06 requires a full 30-minute soak in 21°C water, plus roughly ten days of humidity-and-heat conditioning — about 80 cycles at 65°C and 72% humidity — before a single round is fired. Test velocities rose across Levels IIA, II and IIIA, and IIIA gained a new threat: .357 SIG. The result is a panel proven to work after it’s actually been worn, not one tested laboratory-fresh.

  • Shots land where armor actually fails first.

    The certification protocol tests a full range of vest sizes, smallest to largest, and each ballistic panel takes six hits placed by a strict pattern: rounds within 5 cm of the panel edge and rounds fired at 30° and 45° off-axis, alongside standard centre-mass hits. Edge and angled shots are the hardest test for a poorly built panel — the round arrives with a different footprint, with less material around it to stop it.

  • The same rigor extends to hard armor plates.

    Plates are put through thermal cycling (65°C exposure, then swings from −15°C to 90°C) and humidity exposure, then soaked and tested wet — the same principle as soft armor: prove it works after real conditions, not straight off the shelf.

THE BATCH

One batch, four panels — each one proven on its own.

Batch AT-25.0008 isn’t a single sample chosen to look good. Four production panels — AT-25.0008-1 through -4 — were pulled from the same run and tested individually, side by side.

Every panel carries its own serial marking and its own shot record, so a result on paper traces back to a physical panel, not an average.

THE PROTOCOL

Six shots. Not one — and not straight on.

Each panel took six separate hits, mapped and numbered before firing: centre mass, offset shots, and angled hits recorded at up to 75° from vertical.

An angled round travels a longer path through the weave and strikes with a different footprint than a perpendicular hit — a harder test than a single shot to the chest, and every panel in this batch carried it.

THE IMPACT

Every round, arrested — not one exit.

This is what a stopped round looks like: the projectile caught and held inside the fibre layers, visible where it came to rest. The weave in front of it stayed intact enough to do its job.

Across all four panels and every marked point, the same outcome repeats — no round reached the far side.

INSIDE THE PACK

The back flexes. It doesn’t let go.

Soft armor doesn’t stay rigid on impact — it flexes to absorb energy, and that flex shows on the inner face as visible deformation, sometimes stretching or marking the liner behind a strike.

That’s expected, not a failure: the measure that matters is whether the round itself passes through. In this batch, across 24 recorded hits, it never did.

CONSISTENCY

Consistent — not a one-off.

A single good result can be luck. A repeated one is a process. Every panel in AT-25.0008 produced the same pattern: impact absorbed, structure held, nothing through.
